5 Ways to Improve SEO

SEO, you probably know what it is, you’ve no doubt heard people speaking about it, but how do you nail it…? Put simply, SEO is the act of optimising your website to get organic (un-paid) traffic from the search engine results page to your website.

What we want to see is your website rank within the first 1 or 2 pages when someone searches one of your keywords. A site that is new, has poor SEO, or has never been optimized can perform quite badly and won’t appear anywhere in the first 10 pages, meaning you have very little (or no) chance of being found organically.

There are some really simple, yet highly effective, things you can do right now that can help you improve your organic search ranking - here are our top 5 things to look at when wanting to improve your SEO:

  • Keywords

  • Backlinks

  • Social Shares

  • Customer Reviews

  • Video

Keywords

What are the key phrases or words people are likely to use to find your website? They should be relevant and describe your product or service.

Particularly, if your website is new, each page should have a minimum of 300 words on it and your keywords should appear more than once. Google requires this to index your site.

Backlinks

When another site links to yours this is called backlinking. You could contribute to someone's blog, promote an offer on their website or be featured on their site - they then provide a link that when clicked takes the viewer to your website.

When Google sees that other reputable sites are linking back to yours, it can lift your ranking.

Providing backlinks from your website to other reputable sources is also good for SEO. However, sites linking to you hold more weight. That being said, why not try partnering or collaborating with others and you provide each other with a backlink boosting each other's SEO.

Social shares

Sharing your website to social media will both increase brand awareness and help you drive traffic to your site. The mention of your brand on some social media platforms can also show in organic search results and can outrank your website depending on your Google ranking.

Customer reviews

Reviews provide credibility to your site and can be used to boost your ranking. Ensure you create yourself a ‘Google My Business’ listing and ask your customer to leave a review directly in here for you - this is owned by Google and they’ll love you a little more for using their features.

Video

Landing pages that feature a video are 53 times more likely to reach the first page of Google. Not only that, featuring video on your landing page can help boost conversion by up to 80% - if that’s not a reason to include video on your site then we don’t know what is!

And finally, there are a few other technical things within SEO that need to be looked at to ensure your website is properly optimised, things like H tags, Meta Descriptions and URL slugs to name a few. You can handle these yourself if you don’t mind poking around the backend of your website. But if you’d like a professional to take a look, please get in touch, we can let you know what needs fixing or looking at and can provide you with more information on having these things improved.
